David joined the Harpur Trust in 2002 as Chief Execuitive after a career in the Royal Navy in which he commanded one surface warship and three submarines, including HMS Vanguard, the UK’s lead Trident submarine, and led the UK effort to rescue survivors from the sunken Russian submarine Kursk in the Barents Sea in 2001.
He gained a first class honours degree in law with the Open University in 2004 and has spoken at the Oxford Union. Since he joined the Charity, it has adopted its first Strategic Plan, sponsored an Academy, revised its communications and HR strategy and developed its grant making.
He enjoys reading, sailing and skiing. He has also completed the London Marathon three times. He is married to Kathy and between them they have 5 children all of whom, fortunately, have more sense, intelligence and charm than David.
